Three Hot Dogs You Need to Try in Your Pizza Oven

Finished trio of pizza oven hot dogs featuring classic, Thai, and Mexican street corn-inspired toppings

If someone told us three years ago that one of our favorite things to cook in a Gozney pizza oven would be hot dogs, we'd probably have laughed.

Pizza? Absolutely.

Bread? Of course.

Steaks? Surprisingly amazing.

Hot dogs? Hmmm.

Well. Now we're believers.

The intense heat of a pizza oven gives hot dogs an incredible blistered exterior while keeping the inside juicy. Just remember—pizza ovens get really hot. To keep your hot dogs from scorching before they're heated through, we recommend either poaching them for a few minutes first or lightly scoring them on the diagonal before giving them a quick trip into the oven.

And for the bun? We just used 60 grams of our classic pizza dough, shaped it, added a little "sauce," and then gently folded our hot dog into it before using a peel to place it in the oven. Et voila! Hot dogs in 90 seconds!

You know your hot dog is ready when the dough puffs up, the skin on the dog chars, and everything is sizzling hot.

So, once you've mastered the cook, it's time for the fun part: toppings!

Of course we messed around with a bunch of different sauces, cheeses, and garnishes. So many fun combinations to be had! But here are three of our most favorite ways we found to dress up a pizza oven hot dog.

1. The Backyard Classic

Sometimes you don't need to reinvent perfection.

This is the hot dog that reminds you of summer evenings, backyard games, and wondering if one more hot dog is going to be too many. (Spoiler: it's not.)

Assembly:

  • shape the dough and add ketchup and mustard down the center
  • place the hot dog on top
  • sprinkle with chopped onions
  • cook for about 40 seconds and then rotate to finish cooking
  • optional: finish with a little celery salt for that ballpark flavor

2. The Banh-Style

You know us. We love a good banh mi. Sweet. Spicy. Creamy. Crunchy. And we wanted to bring that same level of bright, tangy, herbal flavor and goodness to a hot dog.

This one borrows inspiration from classic Vietnamese flavors and somehow turns a humble hot dog into something that feels completely fresh and gourmet.

Assembly:

  • thinly shred carrots and cucumber
  • combine in a bowl with rice vinegar to make a slaw
  • shape the dough and spread a layer of Chili Crisp
  • place the hot dog and drizzle with Japanese mayo
  • cook for about 40 seconds, then rotate and finish cooking
  • top with cucumber slaw
  • optional: finish with fresh cilantro, crushed peanuts, and thinly sliced jalapeno

3. The Street Corn Dog

This is the result of street corn and a hot dog taking a summer vacation together.

Creamy, tangy, cheesy, a little spicy—and completely over the top in the best possible way. Maybe our most favorite combination of the day.

Assembly:

  • shape the dough and spread a thin layer of Japanese mayo down the center
  • place the hot dog and top with fresh corn
  • cook on the stone about 30 seconds and rotate to par bake
  • pull it out and add shredded cheese ( suggest either mozzarella or Parmesan)
  • use the peel to hover the hot dog under the flame to melt cheese
  • remove and top with more Japanese mayo, tajin, and fresh lime

A Couple Pizza Oven Tips

Pizza ovens cook much faster than traditional grills, so keep a close eye on your hot dogs.

  • Score the hot dogs with shallow diagonal cuts for extra crispy edges.
  • Or poach them first, then finish them in the pizza oven for 1–2 minutes to develop color without drying them out.
  • Use lots of flour with the dough to help launch your hot dogs. You don't want those puppies stickin' to the peel or the pizza stone!
  • As with pizza in the Gozney, the same goes for hot dogs. Less is usually more while your cooking your dog. Then, once it's hot and ready, you can add the extra toppings to your heart's content.

Which One Will You Try First?

There's something incredibly fun about taking a simple hot dog and giving it the pizza oven treatment. They cook up so fast! And the blistered exterior, juicy center, and endless topping combinations make it one of the easiest crowd-pleasers you'll cook all summer.

Whether you're a fan of the Backyard Classic, craving the sweet-and-spicy Banh-Style, or can't resist the creamy goodness of the Street Corn Dog, one thing's for sure: hot dogs have officially entered the chat for pizza oven season.
