Celebrate Pioneer Day with Fun Flavors, Summer Traditions, & Local Favorites

There’s just something magical about summer in Utah. The days are longer, the grill is fired up, neighbors are outside chatting, and there’s one holiday that feels uniquely ours—Pioneer Day.

Every July 24, Utah celebrates the arrival of the first pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. While it's rooted in history, Pioneer Day has become so much more than a historical celebration. It's a day to gather with family and friends, enjoy great food, support local businesses, and celebrate the adventurous spirit that still makes Utah such a special place to call home.

Whether you’re planning a backyard barbecue, heading to a neighborhood parade, or simply looking for an excuse to gather with the people you love, Pioneer Day is the perfect reason to slow down, make something delicious, and enjoy the traditions that make summer unforgettable.

Celebrate Utah’s Favorite Summer Traditions

One of our favorite things about Pioneer Day? There isn't just one way to celebrate.

Every family has traditions that make the holiday their own, and honestly, that's what makes it so special. Maybe your morning starts with a hometown parade. Maybe your afternoon is spent boating, hiking, or visiting the farmers market. Or maybe the whole day revolves around the food—and we completely understand that.

Some classic Pioneer Day activities include:

  • Watch a neighborhood parade
  • Pack a picnic for the park
  • Visit local historic sites
  • Hike Utah's beautiful mountains
  • Shop your favorite farmers market
  • Spend the day at the lake or reservoir
  • Host a backyard barbecue
  • Cheer on the rodeo
  • Gather for fireworks after sunset

Of course, if you ask us, some of the very best memories happen in the kitchen.

Pioneer Day is the perfect excuse to dust off the Dutch oven, bake a family favorite, or make a homemade dessert that everyone will be talking about long after the last bite.

Bring Pioneer Day to the Table with Traditional Favorites

If there’s one thing that brings people together, it’s good food. And Pioneer Day has plenty of delicious traditions worth keeping.

Dutch Oven Cooking

Few things say “Utah summer” like cooking outside in a cast iron Dutch oven over a pile of hot briquettes.

Whether you’re making savory pulled pork, cheesy potatoes, chili, baked beans, or a classic peach cobbler that disappears before it cools, Dutch oven cooking turns dinner into an event. Everyone ends up gathered around, checking on the food, swapping stories, and waiting for that first delicious bite.

Honestly… the smell alone is worth it.

Fresh Baking

Nothing welcomes guests quite like homemade bread, warm rolls, fruit pies, or fresh cookies cooling on the counter.

Pioneer Day is the perfect excuse to pull out well-loved family recipes—or try a new one that might just become a tradition of its own.

With peaches, cherries, raspberries, and apricots in season, summer practically does half the work for you.

Homemade Ice Cream

If there's one Pioneer Day tradition we never skip, it’s homemade ice cream.

Whether you’re cranking an old-fashioned ice cream freezer by hand or using a modern machine, it’s one of those activities everyone wants to be part of. Vanilla, fresh peach, strawberry, cookies and cream—you really can’t go wrong.

The best part? Someone is always sneaking “just one more taste” before it’s officially ready.
